CNET’s Martin LaMonica Test Drives all-electric Mini Vs. Ford Fusion Hybrid

In two extensive, highly detailed videos, CNET’s Martin LaMonica compares the MINI E and the  Ford Fusion Hybrid .  Worth the watch. More opinion after the jump… [source: cbsnews.com].
I watched these two videos as objhectively as possible… As you probably can imagine, I’m totally a fan of the MINI, and Fords? Well, not so much.  Yet I did walk away (as they say) far more educated about both cars, as well as the future of electric/hybrid/ “alternative fuel” vehicles.  And well, that’s what it’s all about right?

And the Winner Is… (Re-Name The Show Contest)

And now, the moment we’ve all been waiting for!!!!

The entries were posted, the votes came in, and we are excited to announce a winner for the Motorkult TV “Re-Name The Show Contest”, just in time for a full month of engagements (see schedule below)!

It’s been an interesting process and experiment and I appreciate everyone’s participation. But enough about me! You want to know the results, so here they are, in Miss America style reverse order…

2nd runner up, with 17% of the votes is… “Mod Freak Showdown”, submitted by Dennis Perez of Fontana, California! (Wow- that sounds like a cool show!)…

1st runner-up (which took me about 20 years to figure out isa nice way of saying 2nd Place) with 33% of the votes is… “Modtime TV”, also a show I would watch, also submitted by… Dennis Perez of Fontana, California!

And the winning entry, coming in with 50% of the votes… submitted by Brian Cupples of Riverside, Ca…. [drumroll please]…

“Behind the Vroom”!

Brian wins the GRAND DADDY BIG OL’ BADASS prize package which includes:
* An exclusive “STAFF” t-shirt or polo (obviously, only available to staff, and Brian!)
* An “Associate Producer” Byline for the first 5 episodes, because that always looks good on paper;
* An entire episode based on his suggestion/request
* Free trinkets, swag or other merchandise for a full year!
* Unlimited bragging rights

And because I’m that way, we’ll be sending Dennis a t-shirt as well!

Each entry is a great name *and* interesting concept for a show and I appreciate the input from you- the fans. Who knows, we might even spin off a couple shows as a result of this contest! We’ve only got one week before a full schedule of engagements so exactly how to transition to the new moniker will be tricky! Look for us at the following Southern California events in August:

Aug 1-3 2008
MINI Takes The States @ Pasadena/Rose Bowl

Aug 9 2008
Hot Import Nights/Night Shift @ Pomona Fairplex

Aug 10 2008

(Re) Name The Show Contest – The Nominees are…

And the nominees are..

We received a wealth of suggestions for what to re-name the show too. The Motorkult TV Staff pondered each one and narrowed down the list to something manageable. Then it was off to the patent office (virtually, of course). This took a few of the best suggestions off the list, and finally, off to check for domain names and other potential conflicts. This brought the list of contenders to what you see below. Now, the fun begins, as this is where you vote on your favorite!

How to vote:

1) Go to MotorkultTV.com
2) Click on “Vote Now”
3) Vote for your favorite!

It’s that easy!! And don’t forget to check back on July 28th, as we announce the winner, LIVE ON NATIONAL TELEVISION!*

*Not live, not on TV.

NEW MEDIA EXPO COUNTDOWN!

Join us at the New Media Expo, this year being held in wonderful Las Vegas, Nevada! (which is both a good thing *and* bad thing!) Hope to see you there!

(Re) Name The Show Contest!

After two seasons (12 episodes, 10 posted) Motorkult TV is shifting gears (no pun intended) and needs a new name to go along with a new format.

The show will still be about the auto enthusiast lifestyle. We will still cover some of the coolest Southern California car events and meet the folks behind the Southern California “car culture”. But if I tell you anymore, it blows the anticipation! I can tell you this- In the new format YOU ARE THE SHOW!! And this is why it makes perfect sense to solicit the Motorkult TV audience for a cool, new moniker!

The creator of the winning entry will receive:

  • An exclusive “STAFF ONLY” t-shirt or polo
  • An “Associate Producer” Byline for the first 5 episodes
  • An entire episode based on your suggestion
  • Free trinkets, swag or other merchandise developed in the following 12 months
  • Unlimited bragging rights

CONTEST FAQ:

“How do I Enter?”

  • Post your submission as a comment on the Motorkult TV blog “(Re)Name The Show Contest!”:
  • Submissions will be collected until Midnight (11:59:59 PM), July 19, 2008.
  • A poll will be created for each entry and voting will be open from Midnight, July 20th to Midnight, July 27th, 2008.

“How is the Winning Entry Chosen?”

  • The top 5 entries will be cross-checked for trademark/copyright issues, and domain name availability.
  • Only those submissions that pass through this check will be given final consideration.
  • The winning entry will be chosen by the Motorkult TV staff based on a set of criteria including creativity, marketability, uniqueness, etc.
  • The submitter will be contacted via email.

“What do I Win?” The creator of the winning entry will receive:

  • An exclusive “Staff” t-shirt or polo
  • An “Associate Producer” Byline for the first 5 episodes
  • An entire episode based on your suggestion
  • Free trinkets, swag or other merchandise developed in the following 12 months

“Are there Restrictions?”

  • This show is PG-13 (mostly). Name appropriately. :)
  • The show covers all elements of the auto enthusiast lifestyle- Tuners, imports, track cars, dragsters, muscle cars, classics, etc. The new name should reflect this- in other words, it should not refer to a certain segment or type of car.

Additional questions can be posted on the Motorkult TV blog “(Re)Name The Show Contest!” entry (motorkulttv.blogspot.com/2008/07/re-name-show-contest.html) or sent via email to:

We appreciate everyone’s interest and input to Motorkult TV thus far and are pretty sure you will appreciate the new show even more!

Sincerely, Motorkult TV Crew and Staff

2008 Nissan Cube: Boxy. But is it good?

With obvious cues from the Scion xB, Motorkult TV has to ask, “Yes its boxy. But is it good?”

(from automobilemag.com):

“Like a Mini Cooper or a Scion xB, the tiny Nissan is remarkably free of class or gender connotations, a car unhindered by the boundaries of age or demographics. Everyone is interested. Everyone has questions. And everyone loves it.

Nissan developed the Cube in the late 1990s for the Japanese market, and while the oddly styled first-generation model is largely forgotten – picture a shrunken, Astro Boy’d Eagle Summit wagon – the second-generation Cube, introduced in 2003, has developed a worldwide following despite the fact that it’s never been sold outside Japan. Bolstered in part by Scion’s success in the U.S. market, Nissan believes that it can translate homeland box-car sales and rising oil prices into stateside customers. As such, the next Cube is slated to come our way in 2009. Predictably, the PR department at Nissan has cranked into full swing: a pair of 2008 Cubes were loaned to a handful of lucky U.S. film students for a multimedia project, and a few more examples have landed on our shores for media evaluation…”

[ed. note: at time of publication the Nissan-USA website shows no mention of the Cube.]

Chinese Car Clones FTW!

Looking for something completely different, I ran across this hilarious interesting article at RoadandTrack.com, “Chinese Car Clones: 5 Cars That Seem Very Familiar”.

Among my favorites is an exact duplicate of the Scion xB (shown above), as well as the well-covered MINI Cooper spin-off, the Lifan 320. But wait there’s more, including a Smart car clone, as well as a few well-known luxury brands as well. But don’t let me steal R&T’s thunder, especially since their writers got just as big a kick out of writing this article as I did reading it!
